I do not know if you are aware that I actually have another self-hosted blog over at http://www.joeymd.com . This one is more of a blog about my life as a doctor. I didn't really get a big company to do the hosting for me since it was a shot in the dark and I was not really sure about what I want to do. Instead, I got a small startup with a one man team. It's main advantage is that it's cheap. It's main disadvantage is that when my webhost is offline for an extended period of time, I can't contact him. Overall, I'm happy with the hosting and I feel that it is adequate for my blog.
I am thinking of cooking up something else, though. And for this project, I would likely look for a bigger company, since I am guessing that this is going to be a lot more complicated than a simple blog. I am going through web hosting ratings and feedbacks from people who have used their services before. Since I am going to spend quite a bit more money than I did with my blog, I really have to make sure that I would get my money's worth. Companies who have already won some web hosting awards definitely have the edge, but I would not discount others who don't. Another consideration is budget. Mine is tight, so expensive deals are off.
I'm also looking at some very informative web hosting tutorials. I'm not really an internet expert so this is all very educational for me. I may eventually need someone with more IT knowledge to help me in the long run, but for now, I can only rely on myself. That's why I want to arm myself with more knowledge so that I would be able to achieve what I set out to do.
What is it, anyway? I'll just inform you guys when it's up, coz I don't know yet if this will work. I'm crossing my fingers, though, that this will.
If you notice my website, there is a new widget. It's Plurk, and it's pretty addicting. I post comments, my friends get to see them, and they can respond to my comments. Pretty cool way to get in touch online.

Sometimes, it's a little more difficult than we think to look for good and reliable websites. Everybody promotes his or her own website as the best ones. But which ones are, really? It's best to depend on User Website Reviews by actual visitors of the different websites so that you would have a more objective assessment of which are the best websites for your needs.
I've always thought that students nowadays have an easier time with doing their researches since information was so widely available and so easy to obtain using a simple click of the mouse. Search engines like Google have definitely made researching easier for all of us.
What we have to watch out for is misinformation. It does not mean that if the information is out there, it's all bound to be true. When researching, we still have to use our very own "computer", our brains, to filter out which are true and which are not.
Plenty of moms I know dream of being able to work from home. The advent of the internet actually made that dream a reality, as moms can now look for a variety of money making activities online, including hosting an online store, getting freelance work as a writer, being an online consultant, or even get hired and telecommute.
Whatever you decide to do, it is imperative to have an online presence to make yourself visible to the net world. You can either do this by setting up a blog or a website on free sites. That is the easiest and cheapest way to do it. However, free sites just do not look as professional as you want them to. You also lack flexibility in how you want your site to look. It's good to start because it's cheap (free actually) but once you get your online groove, you should really start to check on the different webhosts and try to find the best that will fit your needs. I've found a site that lists the best web hosting plans available so that you can try to have a more professional sounding name plus lots of flexibility in your own site.
It's a sign of the times. Most businesses nowadays have an internet presence. Even individual persons also claim their little space on the web via blogs or personal websites. I realized then that somebody with an IT background could easily have a business reselling web hosting.
I wonder if my brother would be qualified to do that? He took up IT courses a few years back. The problem is that I don't know how much of that knowledge he has retained. Nevertheless, there are available web hosting articles and tutorials that would most likely jog his memory. Have to tell him about this, since he is in search for a good source of income.
If you noticed that I rarely update my blogs during the past few days, that's because my internet connection has been very bad the past couple of days. For some reason, my laptop just would not load pages even if my connection to the modem was OK. All the other computers here could access the internet well enough. It was just mine which had this particular problem.
My husband did a system restore, which seemed to work. But later, when I shut down my laptop, I was surprised to see the same problem again when I turned on the laptop the next day. I thought back to the day when the problem occurred, and remembered that Windows XP updated itself after I shut down. So I went back and removed the latest update. I also changed my system update settings to "no updates".
Lo and behold, this morning, the problem was there again! I looked at the control panel, and the last update was no longer there. So what was the problem?
I tried doing another system restore. I noted that during the past 3 days that I have been having problems with the internet, there was a program called "Software Distribution 3.0" which kept installing even if I turned off the automatic install.
Apparently this is a problem with one of the previous updates of Microsoft Windows. I have deleted 2 previous updates which was noted to be a cause of the problem in a forum I searched.
So far, so good. I hope this is it and I would no longer encounter such a problem! Let's see in the next few days.
